Modern Indonesia Retail Business

Retail business in general is selling a variety of business activities for the consumption of goods or services directly or indirectly. In the retail business trade linkages in the final part of the process of distribution of goods or services and direct contact with the general consumer. then retailer does not make goods and do not sell to other retailers.

However, in the practice of modern retail business is not currently a possibility, many small retailers buy goods in large retail outlets, given the price differences that appear at times certain promotions conducted by the bigger retailler. Bussiness retailers in Indonesia can be generally classified into two namely, modern retailing and traditional retailing. Modern retail is actually a development of traditional retail, which in practice apply modern concepts, the use of technology, and lifestyle to accommodate developments in society (consumers).
If we look at the history of modern retail in Indonesia is already at the start of the 1960s. At that time it appears that the first department Store is SARINAH. In a period of more than 15 years later, the retail business in Indonesia can be developed in a very low level. This can be attributed to economic policy at the beginning of the reign of Suharto's new order, the more build up investments in the exploitation of nature (mining and timber), compared to the retail sector goods and services in the community.

Beginning in the 1990s as a starting point in the Indonesian retail business development. Marked with the operation of one of the major retail companies from Japan, namely "SOGO". Furthermore, with the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 99/1998, which abolished the ban on investors from outside to get into the retail business in Indonesia, its development becomes more rapid.

Nowadays, there are so many modern format retail / market which are as follows:

  1. Supermarket
  2. Minimarket
  3. Hypermarket
  4. Specialty stores / convinience store
  5. Department Store

Modern market is described simply as a place to sell food items or non-food, goods finished or processed materials, daily necessities or other use of self-service format and run the self-service system that consumers pay at the cash register that has been provided. So today many people are familiar with the term "Supermarkets"
